2011 Annual Report
Dear Sun Dragon students, family members, and supporters:
I am happy to report that Sun Dragon had a very successful year in 2011. Our total martial arts enrollment is now approximately 85 students, which represents a stable base. Sun Dragon gave 13 self-defense workshops in 2011, serving approximately 170 participants. One outreach series was at the GENAustin girls retreat, where we taught violence prevention for middle and high school girls and their parents from all over Austin.
The 2011 budget was, once again, the largest annual budget ever for Sun Dragon, with a total income of $99,550. Tuition for the karate program is 73% of our income, with another 15% from the Kickathon, and smaller amounts from violence prevention workshops and uniform and equipment sales. Currently, 15% of karate students receive a partial scholarship, thanks to our fundraising efforts. We spent $101,023, with the largest expenses being approximately 40% each for rent and salary. One major step for the dojo this year was hiring our wonderful office manager, Antares Pacheco. Although we spent more than we earned, we still have money in the bank. However, we will be raising monthly tuition for the Junior, Youth, and Adult programs by $5 a month to offset this gap. The increase will take place beginning February 1, 2012.
Our ongoing goal of growing SunDragon includes increasing enrollment, partnering with new groups to teach violence prevention, and offering leadership opportunities within our own community. We have opportunities of all shapes and sizes for any student who would like to contribute to the life of the dojo. Please consider offering your expertise as a volunteer, instructor, work-study student, or member of the board of directors.
We have many dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to make Sun Dragon the wonderful place it is. Special thanks go to our board of directors: Chair Katie Mahoney, Secretary Summer Cacciotti, Graham Smith, Jeremy Dalberg, Coty Delacretaz, and Janet Troxell.
Finally, I would like to thank you all for being a part of Sun Dragon. I wish you the very best in your training, and your life, in 2012.
Osu!
